Jetset, Tropical, Scrumptious! Resort 2013
Resort 2013! This is one year where there isn’t a huge difference between the trends happening in sportswear vs. resort. Tropical prints, sheers, nautical stripes, and luxe vacation-worthy clothes are mainstream, whether you’re shopping H&M or Net-A-Porter.
Below are my top picks for the most incredible resort looks of the season.

Sachin + Babi mixed graphic print and short tailored shorts with dreamy cascading gradients of sorbet-hued pleats. The designer was inspired by the color of Seville’s limestone chapels, but the delicate, breezy collection is anything but architectural.

–
The contrast of cobalt blue and neon lemon yellow is a classic. Zero + Maria Cornejo worked in blood-orange red on white and dramatic style lines for a resort collection that you’ll need a pretty exotic location to justify. Despite that, the collection itself is effortless. The dresses need nearly nothing in the way of dressing up to look flawless.

–
Romantic as ever, Valentino translates their sportswear into jet-set must-haves by dipping them in sea foam green and other madly popular pastel hues. The floor-length printed gown is by far the knock-out of this set.

–
Inspired by a getaway to the Amalfi Coast, Tory Burch forwent the sea breeze sheers and candy colors for a super Italian motif. The balance is perfect tailoring and easy woven separates, with amazing print and embroidery detail.

–
If you’re going to throw around the term Gypset, this is the right time to do it. Sophisticated lengths that would be shapeless if not for a woman’s body beneath them are presented in summer evening colors: the green night sky over white sand, gradually transitioning into a mesh of purple rain clouds. There were tailored looks, but they felt unnecessary.

–
No surprises here, Thakoon said this collection was directly inspired by the obvious: sorbet flavors and frosting. Thick stripes, cinched waistlines, and stand alone pieces that do all the talking were in the mix. He said he intended to “give the girls what they want.” And he did!

–
Suno always finds a way to my top 3 favorite lines, regardless of season. This time it’s personal. These pastel sports jackets are verbatim what I saw in my head when I was designing my Junior sportswear final project back at FIT… though my results were a few worlds less stunning. At least the dream has been realized. ;}

–
I love when fashion isn’t that serious! Sometimes, it’s a party. This collection is fun, fruity, and light-hearted. I love the crisp baby blue dress with the sheer hem. Appropriately enough, the designer chose a carnival theme for the presentation (lemonade stands and all).

–
More pastels, but forget the flowing sheers and ruffly pleats. Roksanda Illincic chose the geometric road, pairing creme and baby blue pastels with black leather pants. Details emerged along necklines and color blocking kept things interesting. I would say this feels more spring than resort. Tomatoes tomah-toes?

–
Safe to say this is my favorite collection in resort this season… we can see some serious Glamourai inspiration. Refreshingly, pop-colors like teal, lime green, and lemon cobalt blue are used as accents over a strong white palette. The kimono sleeves, the tailored cropped jackets, the token vacation short… it’s all here.

–
I’ve been a sucker for imperial graphic prints around borders for a long time, and resort flavor only further ignites the bias. This collection is the smart, cute, feminine answer to a jet set woman who prefers style over trend (but still appreciates a high-contrast head-turning outfit).

–
Here’s a collection that’s straight forward and luxe. There were plenty of prints, but I favored the rich, solid colors (a dusting of tumeric yellow, a punch of cranberry and orange) over the rest. These are poolside-to-cocktail party looks that you can wear with ease.

–
Jade green botanic prints with matching jade green belts, classic skirt-suits, token floor length drama, and ombre effect? Most of this collection had me clawing the screen with intense longing. Not that I would wear a skirt-suit… but this is Oscar.

–
Fresh, easy, layered looks in organic fabrics are the fashion of the future. Any of these looks could be complimented with a vintage white-wash jacket and some serious baubles for fall, but they stand on their own as resort staples: the sheer cocktail dress, the cropped sweater, the high-waisted printed swing-hem skirt? It has some real versatility, but the message is consistent.

–
Here we take a break from breezy and go all-out opulent with Naeem Khan’s fit-for-a-queen robe dresses and ornate party frocks. Imagine wafting onto the balcony of your summer home at sunrise in one of these gorgeous numbers! Alongside the overt elegance, more modest sportswear separates and one-pieces filled in the holes.

–
Matthew Williamson, my #1. He always manages to make bursts of color and lively prints sexy as hell. He is the master of making 50+ colors in one collection look expensive. Resort 2013 is no exception. This season he paired sheer textured blouses in saturated hues with viciously pretty frocks and floor length summer gowns. These clothes are begging to be paraded along a trans-global party route this summer!

–
Your one way ticket to club Tropicana? Tropical print separates like scoop-neck tees with bikini bottoms and bandeau tops to compliment high-waisted circle skirts. Chris Benz’ set exists with the soul purpose of outfitting lazy, stylish summer days (with a healthy dose of “super cute”).
-
Honorable mentions…
Erdem, Gucci, & Nina Ricci
