Hey daisies, how’s your week going? To be honest, I haven’t been having the best week. I’m a little low on energy and things have been a tad gloomy. But if there’s one way to snap back into inspired-and-cheery, it’s making something!
That’s why I’m so excited DIY Wednesday is here. Today I’ll show you how to transform a pair of earrings from so-so to o-m-g in about 45 minutes. The DIY paint splatter sparkle earrings tutorial is about to brighten up your day.
You’ll need a pair of earrings with some surface room for decoration (mine are a pair of vintage metal cut-out earrings from a flea market), acrylic paint, a brush, and loose glitter in the hue of your liking. You may also choose to use something like Mod Podge to seal the glitter once you’re done.
Step 1.
Lay your earrings flat on a clean surface. Be sure they are void of any dust or particles that could get stuck under the paint. Double-check! You probably haven’t worn them in a while if you’re giving them a makeover. 😉
Step 2.
Pour a bit of acrylic paint (tempera paint works as well) into a cap or jar. I chose silver—you choose what you like! Don’t water the paint down. You’ll want a thick texture so it really stands out on the earrings.
Step 3.
Use a medium-sized paint brush to flick paint onto the earrings. Be careful not to get paint on the metal hooks. You may want to cover them with plastic wrap or tape to avoid doing so.
Step 4.
Pick a glitter color that compliments your paint and earrings. I chose a bronze to keep with the metallic theme. I love Martha Stewart glitter because it’s so vibrant and has a vintage look.
Step 5.
Sprinkle the glitter directly onto the earrings, covering as much or as little of the paint as you wish. I left some showing to create a layering effect.
And hey, take this moment to enjoy the fact that you’re covering something in glitter. This act should never be taken for granted!
Step 6.
Set them aside to dry for 2-3 hours to make sure the paint is firmly dry. Tap them gently on your surface so you can shake off the excess glitter that did not stick.
Be sure to do this thoroughly so you don’t have glitter raining onto your shoulders and neck as you stroll downtown.
(Again, you can seal them with Mod Podge or a similar solution to prevent excess glitter from falling with wear.)
And voila! You’re all set with your exciting new earrings. I think these look so fun, and they’re such a festive upgrade from the originals. All that’s left to do now is go out and have fun in your new earrings!
